A collection of binder covers created for MFA Technical Directors at the California Institute of the Arts. Since the binders contained paperwork and technical build information for specific shows, each Technical Director required something unique.
DEAD AWAKEN
This production showcased a visual performance art piece before the show in the form of painting, tagging and illustrating a wall outside the theatre. This motif influenced the hand drawn graffiti style typography, the splattered background and the layering in of vector sound waves, which also served as a reference to the musical element of the show.
THE GLASS MOUNTAIN
An intensely elaborate set featuring a gridded movable ceiling was the visual cue for this modern production based on a classic fairy tale. The concept of unattainable ideals, light and dark, and the battle for success in modern society grounded this show and inspired the sharp, geometric aesthetic of the binder.
HAMLETMACHINE
This production, a deconstruction of Shakespeare's "Hamlet", showcased a set composed of intricate, interlocking mechanical structures. The design system was intended to emulate this intricacy and provide a graphic interpretation of the technical director's accomplishment on the production.
JACKIE
A postmodern take on the life and legacy of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The set for this show featured rough cut textures, feminine touches and a fake wall which revealed a room full of fabric rolls (an homage to Jackie Kennedy's permanent mark on the fashion world). Most of the show was lit very softly in hues of white so the binder took on this subtlety and still emphasized the technical structure accomplished by the technical director.
MEDEA
This deconstructed adaptation of a Greek tragedy featured a set that was broken down throughout the performance. This was the starting point for the visual chaos in the background of the binder. This design also features a logo that was developed specifically for the tech team to use on their paperwork in order to create a cohesive look.
